Alignment

Flawless Execution lives or dies by alignment.  Therefore the top priority is to get the top to bottom team on the same page: as Deming proposed first know what to do, then do your best.

Attaining truly shared vision and strategy requires relevance and buy-in, and ownership by those accountable to deliver.  Stuff really does roll downhill, but it also must traverse back up the hill. While leadership provides the target on the hilltop, the entire team plays a key role in defining HOW the targets are to be hit. The fundamental building blocks of Senge’s Fifth Discipline… learning organizations, team learning, shared vision… are based upon ongoing open dialogue, two-way flow of ideas.

“Shared” requires a connection with constituents at a personal level, and values have become increasingly important in strategic planning. The stronger the collective values, the higher the level of engagement and the greater the buy-in. And, the more flawless the execution.

Alignment: the process of organizing and maintaining control of the business plan and projects starting with higher level objectives, then basing all subsequent goals and plans on achieving those objectives. Ensuring the team is on the same page, reading from the same book, shooting at the same targets.

Critical to high engagement: I can see the top of the mountain from here….it is clear to me that what I do on a daily basis is connected to the top, and that I have a direct and continuous impact on the success or failure of my organization as depicted in our lag goals and metrics.

Why do so many vision and mission statements never make it down off the wall, why don’t strategic plans make it beyond the board room? Because to the ordinary person they are written in a foreign language. A fundamental issue is lack of substance. No real meaning, no visible action, no connection to me. There is no shared understanding, no cascading to establish connection, clear accountabilities and expectations…no connection to me, and performance is not managed based on whether accountabilities are met.

Same with strategy, even worse with values and guiding principles…low to no connection with those who must make them reality and deliver the intended results. Call to Action: operationalize!

There is a good deal to do here, and the greatest determinant of what gets done as a priority is the Voice of the Customer. Updates will NOT reach spam proportions—not a good way to build the network!
